I am curious, what if we all were rich (budget wise). As I thought to myself I realized something; would it be that great? Some of our beaters/cheap cars are sweet.
Anyway, here's my personal list;
1.My dad's old e30 m3:
It was Turner chipped by a previous owner and that was it engine wise.
I'll chalk that up as $35k
2. Bmw e30 touring:
M3 body and Flares
E30 M3 engine optional.
I'll chalk it up as $20k
$55k total.
3.Bmw 1 series m;
Stock.
$65k
I'm at $120k
4. Saab 95 Wagon
The best one in existence.
Lets say $20k.
$140k total.
5. Saab 9000 Aero
Lets say it's very nice, 8k.
$148k now.
6.1966 Saab 96 Monte Carlo
Top of the line one of these sold last month for $28,000.
I'm at $176,000
7. Subaru BRZ
That leaves $24,000
New, used whatever just a brz for $24k
That's it folks!
EDIT: I hate kinja columns.
You are also allowed to "build" something.

The obligatory E30
Something to take to C&C
...And something to get me around the city
I'd use the rest to pay for college, buy Alfa parts, etc...

1. 10k to fix up my crappy little Focus to showroom condition
2. Exige - 50k
3. Viper ACR - 100k
The rest is just a maintenance budget.

For 200k....
308. @40k
Continental mark IV conv. 40k
Morgan 3 wheeler 50k
Citroen DS 30k?
S2000 20k
My dream garage would be to have one car from every major auto producing country.

I didn't even think Lotus. My Dad buy/sell cars every 6 months or so and he has had 3 Elise's. The one thing I would have to say about them:
GO DRIVE/RIDE IN ONE.
It's amazing in every way. Never have I looked out my side window to see a bikers feet. It's also amazing to drive down the highway and see people point/scream/viciously pull out their phones for a picture.

993/964 911 Cabriolet - $40k As my daily driver
Classic Bronco w/ moderate upgrades - $30k
Cobra Kit Car w/ Fox Body Donor - $20k
= $90k total. Putting the other $111,500 in the motherfucking bank and living comfortably.

V8 Vantage. Specifically this one if possible. (70k)
Then an E92 M3 (50k)
E90 335i (40k)
W140 (15k)
Track spec GTV-6 (20k)

Haha yeah, I've driven all three. Without a moments hesitation, if those were the only three cars I could ever drive again, I'd be a happy man.
Supercars are nice and all, but you can't really do anything with them on the street. And I'd have a bigger smile on my face going sideways in a cheap-ass Cobra kit car than I would worrying about rock chips on a Ferrari 430.

I'd be happy just to see a Lotus, much less get a ride in one haha. The Elise/Exige is my favorite car of all time yet I have yet to see one in person, though apparently there's a matte grey one cruising around my hometown. In 3 years of delivering pizzas there I haven't run across it but I'm holding out hope.

Panamera GTS: $113,000
Cayenne GTS: $82,000
50% Long Executive Car. 50% Haul Family Around.
100% Family Track Days.
Yes I've planned for my life this far and I'm only 19.

Dump appropriate amount of money into E28 to make it how I want it...say, $35k.
New F10 M5 spec'd just as I want it, but euro-delivery'd and with my fried who works at a BMW dealer discount plus some mods...let's say about $115k
The rest of it - a 70s 911 build in the RWB style.
That about covers it.

DD: will survive anything, and absolutely anything becomes un-special if you dd it (30k)
Track car: (Fast, smart enough for any weather condition, and Chris Harris says it's the best car they've produced in decades) 100k + consumables 7.5k
Special occasion/date night/Sunday afternoon car: $45k
Project car: (restomod goodness) 19k

I picture you making friends with a bunch of jdm nightlife punks with all these cars, then inviting them over for a drink. You go out to the garage to grab the booze and their cigs fall out of their mouths as they see the Mercie sitting menacingly in the shadows of the last stall....

Buying 9 cars is nice as well, but my dad has friends with 15 car garages and half of them never get used. There is a such thing as too many cars.
Honestly, I think the 90s 911 is possibly the best DD ever. It says, "I like what I drive, but I don't make a showy fuss." It says, "I like cars, but I don't bore people to death with car talk." It's understated. It's stylish, practical, efficient, small, and it's still an air-cooled Porsche. It would get an A in The Anna Kendrick Test.
Um.. the Bronco is just cool.
And the Cobra is a stronger adrenaline shot than a kilo of blow and 8 steroid shots mixed with actual adrenaline all while on fire. It's that insane.

Subcontract all the project cars. Add cage, racing seats, track license. Let an Appalachian show them Finns what crazy driving is.
Trailer. Towed by turbo volvo wagon camino
The budget? yeah, about that. We need sponsors.

Man, I've never had to plan for having money... I have a family! My list would have to be something like
Tesla S for dd duties 100k
Rotus 7 for track duties/ light groceries... probably 20k for a good one, or restored to that condition.
Probably something like a wrx wagon with sti running gear and suspension in the weather gets bad, so that owuld be like another 35-40k? depending upon how it's built.
and then top it off with a couple of e bikes, brammo empulse as well as perhaps the zero dp bike, and I think that owuld settle my accounts out nicely. Nothing to extraordinary, but a lot of decent stuff. Soo many choices... I could ditch the bikes and build an awesome Spyder... sigh. If only I had those problems.

NSX and a Ferrari what more could a man ask for?
![]() 01/26/2014 at 02:01 |
|
I have a note on my computer for this (though it doesn't necessarily tot up to $201,500). Here goes:
1. 2001-2003 BMW (E39) M5, because it is the yardstick by which every BMW, and very nearly every sports sedan, is measured ($15,000)
2. 1997 Toyota Supra Turbo 6MT in Super White, because it was my semi-attainable childhood fantasy (let's say $50,000)
3. 1988 Toyota MR2, because I like that it looks like a door stop or a dustbuster ($4,000)
4. 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP converted to a ute, because ute ($30,000 + $20,000 for the conversion), no idea how much the conversion would actually cost in parts and labor
5. 1969 Honda 1300 Coupe 9, because it's unique and an impressive feat of engineering ($12,000, though that's basically a made up number since I have no data on which to base my price)
6. 1980s Toyota Pickup SR5 4x4, because sometimes you need a truck that you can use, lend to friends, and generally not worry about the paint; also, it was good enough for Marty McFly ($2,600)
7. Nissan Leaf SV, because I hardly drive at all but need a car that isn't a garage queen ($24,500 after rebates)
8. Scion FR-S, track days ($25,400)
The last three actually aren't on my list, but I need a few cars to actually use. The list leaves $18,000 in the kitty for fuel and mods to the FR-S.
I'll be honest though, the budget wasn't big enough to allow for my big ticket car purchase dream, a 1960/61 Alfa Romeo Sprint Zagato (Coda Tonda), which will usually fetch well over $300k at auction (when they come up for auction at all).

When I did my list I found myself wanting more money... INSANE! I wanted a m1 and an e-type and a couple others!

E63 wagon 140k
E46 M3 30k
Lotus Exige 30k
Numbers are rough estimates.

Pictures aren't attaching so I have to do this the boring way:
1)10k in upgrades to my E39 (suspension, brakes, wheels/tires, light engine tuning, interior trim due to my hatred of fake woodgrain)
2)Subaru Impreza 2.5RS (swap in STI engine to make into 22B)
3)E46 M3
4)E92 M3
5) Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (used around $30k)
Keep the rest for maintenance money.

100K for a Garage like this:
50K on tools/lifts/repairs for said garage.
13K for this as my daily.
This
as a project 1.6K for the car, and 5.4K in parts
This
as a winter beater .9K on car .1K to make it look better/run better.
I'd save the rest of my money, and be happy with those 3. I'd rent out the remaining garage space to DIY guys, and maybe even a speed shop or something

I'm sorry for sounding like a giant asshole, but I find this question incredibly inappropriate. I have a distaste for talking about personal finances and can't help but get the feeling that it sounds like you're saying our resident SLS owner made a poor car buying/financial decision. ex: "Why would you buy an SLS for 200k when you can have all these cars! Look at how enthusiast I am and how boring corporate slob you are."
We all know that BTU is a huge car guy and has the garage to back it up, so I don't think he deserves this. Maybe even he disagrees with me. Maybe I'm blowing this way out of proportion, but this is just my two cents.
